How The VCMS Is Governed

The VCMS is governed by officers elected democratically by the membership. Officers are President, President-Elect, Secretary, and Treasurer; each serves a one-year term, beginning in November.

Assisting the officers in guiding the society is the Executive Committee, a thirty-member group consisting of the officers, the society’s immediate past-president, and members appointed by the current President from the general membership. Executive Committee members may serve three consecutive years.

VCMS members also elect delegates and alternate delegates to the Florida Medical Association House of Delegates, which convenes annually in September. This House, in turn, elects the American Medical Association delegates from Florida.

Officers of the Society also include the Censors Committee, which is made up of nine elected members of the society. This board has jurisdiction in the interpretation of all VCMS regulations pertaining to ethics and conduct. When one physician member brings charges against another, the Censors Committee conducts the investigation.

Much of the VCMS work is carried out by its various committees. Active committee participation is critical to the proper functioning of the medical society. Committees are:

  • Executive Committee
  • Mediation Committee
  • Legislative Committee
  • Membership Committee
  • Budget and Finance Committee
  • Program Committee
  • Advisory Committee to the Medical Alliance
  • Committee for Continuing Medical Education
